Kristyn Fontanella

Miss Mary

Miss Mary is an Irish tradition which no longer exists.

An outdoor dance, created and performed by Kristyn Fontanella, Miss Mary traces the footsteps of the migrating Irish dance masters.

Miss Mary was Kristyn’s first dance teacher. Travelling through parks and fields, embodying the land and its stories, she arrives at a gathering of people, she invites them to exchange and listen.

She asks them:
Where did you come from?
How do you move?
Will you dance with me?

Miss Mary gathers ancestors, nostalgia and community, sharing the stories that live within us all.

About

Kristyn Fontanella continues to evolve an instantly recognizable style which focuses on exploring her vast knowledge of Irish Step dancing within a contemporary context.

Fontanella’s mission is to show another side of the complex world of Irish Step dancing to future generations of Irish dancers.

Kristyn wants her work to be a new way of thinking about Irish Step dancing and for the audience to find the familiar of the old within the new.
